Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are very different from thick, hollow hypodermic needles, and their insertion is barely perceptible. The needles are a bit thicker than a human hair. Also unlike hypodermic injections, acupuncture needles are usually inserted only several millimeters in depth. So, most patients are pleasantly surprised that the procedure as actually quite pain-free and relaxing.
What happens during my first visit?
First-time patients have their problems addressed right away; you do not have to spend your first visit on consultation alone. Dr. McKenney will assess your health with special examinations of your pulse and tongue, and go over your health history in depth to determine what acupuncture points your condition requires, as well as how many sessions will be needed.

How long will the appointments last?
The first visit, with full consultation and treatment, is approximately 1.5 hours. Follow-up visits usually last about 45 mintues to one hour.
How long will I need treatments?
Some complex or long-standing conditions may require one or two treatments per week for several weeks or months, while other conditions can be treated with very few treatments. Maureen designs personalized treatment plans for every patient.
Do I need to do anything special to prepare for my acupuncture treatment?
You should wear comfortable clothes to your appointment, and eat something beforehand. You also should refrain from rigorous exercise for at least two hours before and after each acupuncture treatment. It is a good idea to have something small to eat an hour or two before your appointment.
